Validation Study of HiDE-S Published in International Journal Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences (May 13, 2025)

2025.05.28

At our lab, we have developed the HiDE-S (Hikikomori Diagnostic Evaluation – Screening form), a 12-item survey designed to assess the state of hikikomori simply and efficiently.

We conducted a validation study to examine how effectively HiDE-S can be used in clinical and research settings.

With the cooperation of patients visiting the Mood Disorder and Hikikomori Outpatient Clinic at Kyushu University Hospital, as well as participants from an online survey, we analyzed the data. We found that the HiDE-S is able to reliably identify 〝individuals experiencing hikikomori who are likely in need of support.”

The findings were published on May 13, 2025, in the international journal Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences (PCN).

This study is a collaborative effort between the Hikikomori Research Lab at Kyushu and Hokkaido (led by Professor Takahiro. A. Kato, Department of Neuropsychiatry, Hokkaido University) and the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona, Italy (Professor Umberto Volpe and psychiatric resident Dr. Salvatore Reina, who is currently conducting research at the Kato Lab).
